Motor Power: A quality E-bike motor typically ranges from 250W to 750W, providing sufficient power for most riding conditions, including hills in this area. A motor between 500W and 750W is ideal for tackling varied terrain, while a 250W motor is great for suburban or recreational rides, like camping or bike paths. In New York State, the maximum allowable motor power for E-bikes is capped at 750 watts.
Speed: In New York, E-bikes are legally limited to a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour. This speed is more than adequate for most commuting and recreational rides, offering an efficient and enjoyable ride while staying within state regulations. For longer trips or regular commuting, opting for an E-bike with a longer range ensures that you can ride confidently without worrying about recharging.
Comfort and Handling Features
Wheel Size: E-bike wheels typically range from 20 inches to 29 inches. Smaller wheels are more nimble and better for urban environments, while larger wheels provide greater stability and comfort, particularly for longer rides or rougher terrains. Consider your primary riding conditions when selecting the wheel size. A 20 inch wheel is usually preferred for most urban and commuter riding since the weight is closer to the ground and the bike is more easily maneuvered.
Suspension: E-bikes come with different suspension types to improve comfort, especially on uneven or rough roads.
