Guide for Buying an E-Bike
We've identified three primary features to consider when purchasing an e-bike: Performance, Practicality, and Comfort & Handling.

Performance Features
Motor Power: A quality E-bike motor typically ranges from 250W to 750W, providing sufficient power for most riding conditions, including hills in this area. A motor between 500W and 750W is ideal for tackling varied terrain, while a 250W motor is great for suburban or recreational rides, like camping or bike paths. Higher wattages draw more power from the battery, which can affect range. If you're interested, we can dive deeper into how volts and amps work together to manage the bike's energy consumption. In New York State, the maximum allowable motor power for E-bikes is capped at 750 watts.
Speed: In New York, E-bikes are legally limited to a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour. This speed is more than adequate for most commuting and recreational rides, offering an efficient and enjoyable ride while staying within state regulations. The bikes available at Upstate Bicycle Works are designed to reach this speed, providing you with optimal performance while adhering to the legal limit.
Range: The range of an E-bike—how far it can travel on a single charge—is a critical consideration. Most E-bikes offer a range between 40 and 70 miles per charge, depending on factors such as rider weight, terrain, and motor power. When selecting the ideal range, consider your daily commute and the distance you plan to ride. For longer trips or regular commuting, opting for an E-bike with a longer range ensures that you can ride confidently without worrying about recharging.

Comfort and Handling Features
Wheel Size: E-bike wheels typically range from 20 inches to 29 inches. Smaller wheels are more nimble and better for urban environments, while larger wheels provide greater stability and comfort, particularly for longer rides or rougher terrains. Consider your primary riding conditions when selecting the wheel size. A 20 inch wheel is usually preferred for most urban and commuter riding since the weight is closer to the ground and the bike is more easily maneuvered.
Suspension: E-bikes come with different suspension types to improve comfort, especially on uneven or rough roads. A front suspension (hardtail) is suitable for smoother rides, while a full suspension system absorbs shocks from both the front and rear wheels, making it ideal for trail riders or those who frequently encounter rough surfaces.

Practical Features
Practical FeaturesCargo Carrying Capacity: Many E-bikes come with integrated racks or offer accessories for carrying items. If you plan to use your E-bike for commuting or shopping, look for a model that can handle the load you need to carry. Stronger frames and larger racks are essential for safely carrying groceries, work bags, or other items.
Accessories: E-bike accessories can enhance your overall riding experience. Popular additions include phone holders, baskets, and racks. For safety, our e-bikes already come with lights and fenders to help with visibility and protection against the elements.
Waterproof Battery: Both Rad Power Bikes and Velotric offer bikes with waterproof batteries, which is a crucial safety feature for outdoor conditions. This ensures your battery remains protected from rain and moisture, allowing you to ride with confidence even in unpredictable weather.
